Case Description
hello almost half of my molar tooth is decayed, all the way till the gum level so it probably would need root canal treatement

but since at the end there will be nothing to support a crown but half of the tooth, i am considering extracting it, to avoide possible future complications if i treated it (i cant afford implants) are there any other options? i have delta dental insurance by the way

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Cost Estimate: $see fees discussed above
Extracting the tooth is an option, depending on how much of the tooth is remaining, the health of the gums and bone supporting the tooth, and your budget. Saving such a tooth typically involves a root canal (done by an endodontist approx.$900-1000), gum surgery (done by a periodontist to expose more tooth structure approx. $600-700) and a crown and post/core (done by me approx $1100). Extracting the tooth (done by an oral surgeon approx $200-300) is cheaper and quicker, but leaves a space with can cause drifting of the neighboring teeth but can be filled with a non-removable bridge later if you desire. Delta usually pays approx. $1000 to $1500 maximum per year. If you wanted to save the tooth (and it is savable) perhaps you could get the root canal done in 2007 and the gumwork and crown done in 2008.

If you would like me to take a look at your tooth and give you my opinion call my office at 248-356-8790. I''''d be happy to help anyway I can.

Cost Estimate: $ No Estimate at this time. Additional information required.
As long as the decay has not split the tooth into two roots, the tooth is savable with a root canal, post and core, and crown. Sometimes if the decay goes below the gum, a periodontist may need to do a procedure called "crown lengthening". These procedures will save the tooth. It is always less expensive to save a tooth then to do an implant. Hope this helps
